Officer Meeting (2010-09-30)

Agenda

1 Plugging for Volunteers – Quick

  • Social hour.
  • Chenlu’s seminar series.

2 GSI Supplement News – 15 minutes

  • Our constituents care about them so we talked to Dana (more later)
  • First big problem: can’t call it a GSI supplement because union won’t let
    us pay GSIs
  • Some parties have a “It’s just part of the program” attitude: we need a
concrete reason and united front for getting it.

3 Upcoming Events: Faculty Town Hall – 35 minutes

3.1 News Update: Meeting with Dana – 10 minutes

Chatted with Dana about format of the discussion. Reshaping questions.

3.2 Event Planning: Attendace, Ringers, New Questions – 25 minutes

Brainstorming on how EEGSA should be involved with running the event.
Ideas:

  • Pack the crowd with officers
  • Plan extra questions for the day of
  • Publicize like crazy: social hour and word of mouth and email

4 What are Our Goals for the Year? – 10 minutes

We need to decided what big projects we want to focus our energy on in the future.
Let’s have a quick brainstorming session on that.

5 Quick Officer Reports – Seriously, like a minute each

  • Treasurer
  • Social Chair – Feel free to put Social Hour/Bar Night/Special Event
    Coordinators on the spot.
  • Industrial Liaison
  • GA Liaisons
  • Webmaster
  • Faculty Interviews
  • Prelim Ombudsmen

Notes

Regarding input on concrete arguments for unified GSI supplements:

  • $300 is quite simply a big percentage of graduate student income.
    • Especially with Berkeley cost of living.
  • Departmental GSI requirement increased to 30 hours is essentially a pay cut.
    • Since GSIs get paid less and now more is required.
  • Lower GSI stipend acts as a disincentive to serve as a GSI.
    • A GSI is like a punishment in this sense.

Town Hall:

  • Announce at social hours! All officers must attend if able and spread the word.
  • Presidents to continue channeling student input into agenda and format.
  • I think we forgot to ask for student volunteers to present questions.

Other gripes:

  • Everyday office stuff is an impossibility to obtain quickly due to pay and bureaucracy issues.
  • A streamlined minutiae experience is possible.
    • Can EEGSA request the department for additional funds to serve as a facilitator?
  • Management culture is lacking, which results in delays of this nature.
  • We have no strong leader to will other people into working together in resolving office issues.

Big Ideas:

  • Big event, like skiing, surfing, going to las vegas
  • Repainting Cory Hall, esp. stairways (open murals?)
  • Grad and undergrad research mixer

Industrial Liaison:

  • EEGSA can cosponsor some infosessions (2-3 this semester, up to 5 next semester)
  • EEGSA can have extra infosessions off-campus (bar nights etc)
    • We first have to pick from dept industrial liaison list first
    • Can charge up to $500 for a cosponsorship
  • Mysterious Lockheed and Sandia checks are no longer
  • Can sell social hours in addition to bar nights; recruiters banned unless they are on above list

Treasurer: Shit is on track.
Social Chairs: Bar Night poll to be sent out.
Webmaster: Site redesigned, group account to be created for officers only.
