April 2011 Graduate Assembly Announcements

Dear GA Delegates and Alternates,

As the San Francisco Chronicle reported this morning, former Tang physician Bob Kevess has been arrested on charges of sexual assault. Dr. Kevess is accused of sexually assaulting six male patients during their visits at Tang since 2007. We are saddened by this tragedy and the grave violations of students’ trust and personal rights. Dr. Kevess no longer works at the Tang Center.

We appreciate the proactive stance that the Tang directors, providers and staff have taken in addressing this matter. Upon the first complaint, Dr. Kevess was suspended and a criminal investigation was launched by the police. The Tang Center is taking this matter seriously and has begun implementing changes to prevent similar occurrences in the future. We want to emphasize the level of trust and respect we have for the current Tang staff. We believe our campus’ health center remains one of the leading college medical facilities.

The Tang Center has provided us with a list of resources available to students (see below). Please feel free to forward this information to your departments or student who you think may be especially affected.

– Special line for concerned patients – (510) 642-3738
– UC Berkeley Police (if you want to report further information regarding this case) – (510) 642-0472
– Social Services – (510) 642-6074
– Counseling and Psych Services – (510) 642-9494

There is also an open letter from the Chancellor and the Tang Directors available at http://newscenter.berkeley.edu/kevess/. A timeline of events is also posted at this website.

Best regards,
